Beneficial micro-organisms, other than contributing to the production of good wine and cheese, are also invaluable help in your livestock production activities.

EM•1® has a wide range of applications in livestock production such as pasture recuperation, livestock health and installation sanitation. Pasture Recuperation


EM•1® can be used to better the physio-chemical and micro-biological conditions of soil; it also helps in accelerating natural decomposition of organic residues in the field.  With this it is possible to recuperate the graded pasture and increase the availability of dry material for silage.

Mode of Use and Considerations

•    20 to 40L per ha of activated EM•1®, at 4 to 8 applications per year.  For a better and speedy result, the following application and dosage can be applied:  
o    Year 1 – 40L per ha of activated EM•1® at 8 applications per year.
o    Year 2 – 30L per ha of activated EM•1® at 6 applications per year.
o    Year 3 and onward – 20L per ha of activated of EM•1® at 4 applications per year.
*If irrigation system exists, there should be no cost of application since activated EM•1® can be applied through the system at a direct dilution within the holding tank.

EM™ will have little effect in soils poor in organic matter (less than 1.5%) since Organic Matter is necessary for the organisms to work more efficiently. It will be required to incorporate soil organic matter within such soils.

•    Aid in the cleaning of irrigation system.
Use in Feed and Water

The use of activated EM•1® in the feed and water given to livestock has as objective to increase the digestibility and the assimilation of nutrients as the micro-organisms such as lactobacillus and saccharomyces found in EM™ have been used successfully as probiotics in animal feed.  In addition to making the digestive process more efficient in ruminants, EM•1® also reduces the production of methane gas from the intestines of the animals.  

EM•1® can be used in two ways in animal feed:
1.    by direct fermentation of a feed source (Bokashi); or
2.    by direct aspersion over the concentrate or ration of the animal.

Mode of Use and Considerations

•    Water for animals:
-    1L of activated EM™ for every 3,000L of water.
-    Dilute activated EM•1® in tank.
-    Apply daily application of activated EM•1® during the productive cycle.

•    Mineral salts of animals:
-    1L of activated EM•1® in 10L of clean, non-chlorinated water.
-    Spray solution over mineral salts once weekly.

•    Supplemental feed:

1.    Direct aspersion:
a.    1 L of activated EM•1® in 100L of clean non-chlorinated water.
b.    Spray the solution over ration, silage or supplements that are being fed to the livestock.

2.    Consumable anaerobic Bokashi:
a.    For the fermentation of livestock feed (Bokashi), use 0.5L to 1L of activated EM•1® per 100kg of concentrate or whichever component that is being fed to the animals (e.g. rice meal, corn meal, soy bean meal, flour meal, etc.).  Once the Bokashi is made, use it daily at a dosage of 1% to 3% of the total feed being offered to the animal.

Methodology in making Anaerobic Bokashi:

-Distribute the selected material over a compact and clean surface (preferably over plastic sheeting or cement floor).
-Spray activated EM•1® over the feed material and mix well. If the waster used in spraying is not sufficient add more water to obtain a final humidity of 30 -35%.
-Place the feed material in a plastic bag or container that will maintain a hermetic seal (no entrance of air). If possible use 200 L plastic container with removable top.
-Extract the air from the interior of the plastic bag or container. Keep away from light and leave to ferment for 7-10 days. Maintain container at temperature below 35oC.
-After the above period, the Bokashi should present an odor of fermenting liquor. At this moment the Bokashi is ready to be used. If the Bokashi does not have such odor it means it was contaminated and must be discarded.
-Supply daily Bokashi to animals.
•    Week 1: use Bokashi at 1% of the total daily ration.
•    Week 2: use Bokashi at 2% of the total daily ration.
•    Week 3 and beyond: use Bokashi at 3% of the total daily ration.

Benefits

•    Eliminate the bad odor within the installations of the livestock.
•    Reduce the incidence of flies, ticks and other undesirable insect pests.
•    Significantly better the health of the animals (e.g. reduction of mastitis and diarrhea (coccidia).
•    Reduce the requirements of regular medication, antibiotics and disinfectants.
•    Reduce the stress factors of the animals thereby strengthening the immunological system against diseases.
•    Better the fertility period of the animal.
•    Animals expose to EM•1® are noted to have better skin and healthier hoofs.
•    When used with feed it improves the digestibility of the animals and consequently better the feed conversion rate and hence an improve growth rate and weight of the animals.
•    Reduce the production of methane gas in the intestine of the animals and hence improve the feeding habit of the animals.
•    Improve microbiologically the quality of the water by its enrichment with beneficial substances such as amino acids, vitamins and enzymes that better the digestibility and nutrient assimilation of the animals.

The best results have been obtained when EM•1® is used in an integrated manner of the processes described above. The microorganisms contained in EM•1® are natural and already exist in the digestive system of the animals but in small quantities. When EM™ is used continually, the population of the beneficial microorganism increases and causes the digestive system to be more efficient through the elimination of the pathogenic microorganisms within.

Pest Control


EM•5 can be used to maintain the health of the herd. To do so it’s necessary to realize a different activation process that consists of the addition of natural products such as molasses, fruit vinegar or alcohol at 40% proof.  The activation procedures are similar to the activation of EM•1®.  The process is as follows:

How to make EM•5

•    To prepare a one-liter solution:
o    Clean non-chlorinated water……….600ml (60%)
o    Molasses……………………………100ml (10%)
o    Fruit vinegar………………………..100ml (10%)
o    Alcohol 40% proof…………………100ml (10%)
o    EM•1®………………………………...100ml (10%)
•    Dissolve molasses in water in a plastic container that allows a hermetic seal (i.e. sealed from air entering container).
•    Combine vinegar, alcohol and EM•1®.  Shake well to dissolve ingredients until a homogeneous solution is formed.
•    Close container well to prevent air entering.
•    Maintain container in a place where temperature ranges between 25 and 40o C over a period of 4 to 7 days to allow for fermentation.
•    At day 2 of the fermentation process, gas is produced.  Open container to eliminate excess air when necessary.
•    EM5 is ready to be used as of day 4 through 7 when the pH of the solution is below 4 or when there is a fermented odor and change in color from dark brown to light brown.
•    EM5 should be used during 35 days following the activation process.
•    Store EM5 in a well ventilated area away from children and domestic animals.
•    If the solution has a pungent odor or the pH rises above 4 it means that the solution has been contaminated and must be discarded.
•    ATTENTION: at activating EM5 do not use containers that can be confused with drinking containers.

Mode of Use and Considerations

•    Installations:
-    Prepare a solution of 1L of EM•5 to every 100L of clean non-chlorinated water.
-    Spray the solution both inside and outside the installation for about a month.

•    Livestock:
-    Prepare a 2% solution of EM•5 plus 1% vegetable oil (or 400 ml of EM•5 plus 200ml of vegetable oil in 19.4 L of water.
-    Spray the animals completely every 15 days until ticks and flies are reduce or eliminated. If the animals become re-infested, redo the applications every 15 days until eliminated.

Management of Organic Residues


EM•1® can be used in the management and treatment of animal manure within the corral thereby transforming the residues in compost of excellent quality, enriched with microorganisms and beneficial substances.

Mode of Use and Considerations

•    1L of Activated EM•1® for every 300m2 of the corral.
•    Dilute Activated EM•1® in 19L of clean non-chlorinated water and spray within area.
•    Direct the spraying at the manure and the floor of the corral.
•    Apply daily application before removal of manure.
•    For holding tanks and manure storage, apply 1L of Activated EM•1® for each 1m3 of total volume of manure. This inoculation process accelerates the humification of manure, eliminate bad odor and reduce the presence of insects.

In cases where great volume of manure and other organic residue is generated, such as in confinement system, the residues can be transformed to fertile compost (Bokashi) within a period of 2-3 weeks. The final product can be reapplied in the field or commercialized.  For such the following is recommended:

Mode of Use and Consideration

•    1L of activated EM•1® per 1m3 or 1 ton of material.
•    Dilute 1L of activated EM•1® in 18L of water.
•    If it’s possible, add to the mixture calcium carbonate in a rate of 10kg per m3 or ton to help in retaining nitrogen.
•    Add animal manure (cattle, goats, chicken or pigs) up to 40% of the total mixture to be composted.
•    It is best that the organic residues are in small portions to enable the acceleration of the fermentation process.
•    While mixing the material, apply the activated EM•1® solution over the material.  It’s only necessary to apply activated EM•1® once.
•    Form beds of 1.5m high x 3m wide to facilitate the management of materials.
•    For a better fermentation, maintain humidity at 40% and if possible cover material with a plastic covering (40% humidity is optimal when material can be squeezed by hand and water does not drip through the fingers).
•    Check temperature: when temperature reaches 60o C the materials should be mixed to reduce the temperature (temperature above 60o C will cause bacteria responsible for decomposition to slowly become inactivated).
•    Depending on the size and type of material used, the compost should be ready to use in 2 to 3 weeks (Bokashi).
•    Apply the compost directly in the field at a dosage of 1kg per m2.

Benefits

•    Increase the fermentation process of organic residues between 2 to 3 weeks.
•    Increase the availability of nutrients present in the organic residues (principally, nitrogen and phosphorus).
•    Accelerate the conversion of organic matter into humus.
•    Enrich organic material with beneficial micro-organisms.
•    Reduce cost of transportation of residues destined for the field due to decrease in its volume after composting.
•    This decomposition process is odorless hence eliminating the presence of insects (e.g. house flies).
•    Optimize the physical space necessary for the elaboration of organic compost and consequently reduce the use of machines and the cost of infrastructure necessary.
•    Eliminate bad odor and flies from the installations.
•    This method is a cheap source of manure and other organic residue management.

Installation Cleaning and Odor Control


EM•1® can be diluted in water storage tanks to clean the installations or simply spray manually for improve hygiene and control of odor.

Mode of Use and Considerations

•    If used in tanks or for nebulization, use 1L of activated EM•1® for every 50L of water.  Use the water daily in routine farm activities.
•    If used in direct spraying, use 1L of activated EM™ in 19L of water for every 300 m2 of installation.  Spray the installation and there surrounds daily for two consecutive weeks. Once the odor disappears, spray three times per week until the final reproductive cycle of the animals.  If the odor returns, re-apply daily for another week.

The objective of daily spraying is to establish the population of effective micro-organisms™ in the manure and water film on the floor thereby restricting the proliferation of micro-organisms that causes rot of organic matter hence increasing undesirable odor and diseases.

Benefits

•    Significantly reduce undesirable odor within the installations.
•    Reduce the presence of flies and other insects.
•    Help to obtain quality organic residues that can be used as compost.
•    Directly inoculate bio-digester systems in the event that such is established within the farm.
•    Use of activated EM reduces the overall cost of operations.
•    Reduction in the use of agro-chemicals and antibiotics.
•    Improve relationship with neighboring producers.

Effluent Treatment


One of the best tools for the natural treatment of effluence is the use of EM•1®.  The use of EM•1® reduces the need to construct expensive installations and the high maintenance costs in treating effluence.  It also reduces labor stress and re-establishes good relations with neighbors as they will not be inhaling noxious gasses that are detrimental to their health.  Before indicating the dosage and mode of use, it is important to consider the follow factors:

•    EM•1® is not compatible with protozoan.
•    Effluence with BOD greater than 2,000mg per L, consult our specialized technical personnel for assistance.
•    EM•1® is not compatible with chemical re-agents, principally oxireducers and surfactants, chlorine-based solutions, creoline and silver sulphate.  The use of chemical substances should be suspended at least one month before initiating treatment with EM•1®.

The treatment of effluence with EM•1® should be realized in two phases: Inoculation phase and Maintenance phase.

EM•1® can also inoculate bio-digester system and will function as a catalyst for the decomposition of the residues thereby increasing the production of a more purified methane gas.  If a bio-digester is non-existent, EM•1® can be used to rapidly compost all solid organic waste and reduce undesirable odor.  

Mode of Use and Considerations

1.    INOCULATION PHASE
•    Systems with BOD between 2,000 and 1,000 mg/L, use dosage of 1L activated EM•1® for every 500L of total volume of water in lagoons or treatment tanks.
•    Systems with BOD below 1,000 mg/L, use dosage of 1L activated EM•1® for every 1,000 L of total volume of water in lagoons or treatment tanks.

Lagoons and sediment tanks (aerated or non-aerated), use the following application:
•    Month 1:  3 applications weekly of the recommended dosage according to the BOD of the system.
•    If, at finishing the treatment there is no significant result, repeat the dosage for another month.

2.    MAINTENANCE PHASE
•    Weekly maintenance of the system by application of 1L of activated EM•1® for every 1,000L of effluent.
•    After six weeks of maintenance, applications of the system can be trimestrial (every three months).
•    Maintenance of the system will be necessary always when there are daily discharges within the system.

Benefits

•    Efficient reduction of bad or noxious odor within the system (ammonia, sulphuric and methanogenic gases.
•    Rapid digestion of organic matter and consequently reduction of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD).
•    Efficient reduction in the concentration of coliforms, e.coli and other water-borne bacteria.
•    Eliminate the construction of expensive treatment systems and high maintenance of treatment effluence.
•    Significantly reduce sediment load.
•    Reduce the necessity of chemical products.
•    Significantly reduce operational cost of the system.
•    Increase the production of purified methane gas within bio-digesters.
•    Reduce stress among the animals and workers due to the reduction of odor and the production of noxious gases.
